Canadian Baptist Seminary - July '06 - Mission Spotlight

Canadian Baptist Seminary

Visit the Mission Resource Room to learn more about our partnership with the Canadian Baptist Seminary.  The Mission Resource room is located in the foyer on the right side as you enter the main building doors and has a sign that says, Missions, over it.  Through this partnership we seek to partner with the students and faculty and our church members to provide multiple cross-cultural mission fields for the purpose of bringing the hope of Christ to all people and strengthen the spiritual character of both the church and seminary.

Canadian Baptist Seminary Students Help Louisiana Church Rebuild after Hurricane Katrina

Barry Nelson has been burdened for the damaged and devastated churches in Louisiana. Until recently, it was a burden he wasn't sure he get to act upon, until he saw a notice in his church bulletin about the Canadian Convention of Southern Baptists taking a team down to a church in Pine, La. Nelson signed up, and spread the word on the seminary campus, recruiting four other people to join him on the trip.

One of those four people was Jordan Smith, a Samuel student in his second semester. Smith was initially hesitant to join the trip, but felt like God might want him to go. When I talked to Barry about it, I was interested, but couldn't pay for it because I can work in Canada,” he said. Barry came up to me the next day and said, It taken care of.’ I was out of excuses at that point.”

The group drove 40-plus hours one way to reach Pine, La. When they arrived, they saw quite a bit of work before them. The church was able to repair the damage done to the sanctuary roof, but the education space was damaged as well, and instead of simply repairing it, the church saved funds to build a new facility. This is what the CSBS group helped to construct. By the time they left, the group had framed the entire building and had begun work on the exterior.

While on the trip, the group drove through several of the areas most devastated by Katrina, including Gulfport, Miss., where most of the buildings on the water were leveled to their foundation.  It was barren,” said Smith. There were literally mountains of rubble. The hotel buildings were skeletons, and there were boats lying all over the place.”  John Groot, another member of the group added, There was so much work to do there. I feel like we accomplished something, but there&rsquos still so much left to do.”

Please keep this month's Mission Spotlight, Canadian Baptist Seminary, in your prayers.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
